Climate change is causing/putting significant threats and pressure on cities in Egypt, crucially affecting water, agriculture, and food security and threatening people’s livelihoods. Moreover, the widespread environmental and urban growth and pollution challenges mainly affect public health.
However, there’s clear evidence of Egypt’s commitment to working hard on climate issues. At the national level, it has launched the Climate Action Strategy for 2050, highly prioritising climate change issues and fully committing to international agreements. At the local level, two Governorates and their mayors have demonstrated their willingness and capacity to change the course of things and prepared their Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plans, SEACAPs, with the support of the Clima-Med project.
By preparing their SEACAPs, six cities from the Governorate of Luxor (Esna, Al Bayadia, Al Zinnia, Al Tod, Al Qurna and Armant) and four from the Governorate of the Red Sea (Marsa Alam, Al Qusayr, Ras Ghareb and Safaga) took an advanced step in proving their willingness and dedication to face climate change, reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and build a model sustainable cities with a clear vision, objectives, targets and actions.
In line with the Egyptian National Climate Change Policy, these plans will pave the way for a more stable and climate-resilient socioeconomic context in Egypt.
Clima-Med will continue to strengthen the support to its cities and provide them with all practical tools and assistance to accelerate the implementation of replicable projects in their SEACAPs, empower local authorities as awareness-raisers, and engage citizens against Climate Change to respond to urgent priority needs of the local population actively.
Through the Clima-Med project, the European Union is committed to supporting the transition of South Mediterranean countries to a sustainable, low carbon and climate-resilient economy by enhancing their energy security and strengthening their adaptative capacity to climate change impact.
