As part of the European Union-funded ‘Climate for Cities (C4C)’ program in Irbid, co-financed by the Greater Irbid Municipality and supported by Clima-Med technical assistance, Yarmouk University (YU) is leading two research initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable urban development and enhancing construction management practices.”

I: Enhanced Clash Detection in Building Information Modeling (BIM) Using Modified Extreme Gradient Boosting (MXGBoost)

The research on Enhanced Clash Detection in BIM aims to improve the identification of design conflicts within BIM models by utilizing the MXGBoost algorithm. This approach facilitates the early detection of potential clashes between building systems, such as HVAC and structural elements, thereby minimizing disruptions during construction and reducing overall project costs.

Launched in October 2023, the C4C project has advanced through several phases, including algorithm development, testing, and optimization. These efforts culminated in the publication of a paper in Results in Engineering Journal (Impact Factor: 6.0) in November 2024. The algorithm demonstrated impressive predictive accuracy (MAE: 0.057, MSE: 0.0034, AUC: 0.972), showcasing its potential to improve project coordination, reduce errors, and increase construction efficiency.

In the Cleaner Energy-Saving Multi-Use Public Building project in Irbid, this research is poised to play a pivotal role in detecting and resolving clashes between HVAC and structural components early in the design phase. By doing so, it will streamline the project timeline, reduce waste, and support sustainability goals, ultimately enhancing energy efficiency.

II: Emissions Estimation from Proposed Parking Areas in Irbid

This study focuses on estimating vehicle emissions in proposed parking areas in Irbid, Jordan, addressing air quality concerns linked to traffic congestion. It will analyze emissions of CO, CO2, NOx, VOCs, and particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5), with the aim of providing critical data to guide urban planning and inform emission reduction strategies. The research will help identify high-emission hotspots and support the development of sustainable parking solutions in Irbid.

In conclusion, both research initiatives are instrumental in advancing sustainable urban development in Irbid. The MXGBoost-enhanced BIM clash detection improves project efficiency and cost-effectiveness, while the emissions estimation study provides essential data for air quality management and emission reduction strategies. Together, these projects contribute to the creation of a more sustainable and resilient urban infrastructure in Jordan.
