Main features:
Safaga City is considered one of the most important therapeutic tourist centers. Moreover, the town was also a merchant port for many years. The city plays an important role in the export of phosphates, and it is a major local terminal for the ferry to Saudi Arabia.
Main economic activities:
Concerning the industry, in the south of the town, there are Al Sukkari gold mine, a marble production quarry and other quarries for stones and sand. The city is also famous for the production of phosphate, one of the most important and most sought after materials in the local and international markets. For the commercial sector, there are shops within the city where young people work. Safaga is an important port in the process of export and import of all commercial goods. It is considered an important transit point for Egyptians to cross into Saudi Arabia. The port is also flourishing and active in the pilgrimage season, where a special village was established to receive and serve the pilgrims and facilitate their journey to the Saudi port of Daba. Alongside recreational tourism, Safaga is characterized by therapeutic tourism. The beaches of this city are famous for black and that helps to treat many skin diseases such as psoriasis and scabies, as well as for the healing of arthritis and rheumatism.

It should be noted that in line with the city population, the average urbanization is 96.9%. The electricity is supplied to the city and for the water use, the drinking water in the city is supplied to the citizens from three desalination plants that produce 3000 m3 per day. The city’s network covers about 80% of the housing units. The main climatic events that is hitting Safaga is water scarcity, droughts and extreme heat.
