The name of Al Qurna The name Qurna signifies “a promontory” or “a point of a mountain”
New Qurna was designed and built in the late 1940s and early 1950s by Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy to house people living in Qurna. New Qurna was added to the 2010 World Monuments Watch List of Most Endangered Sites to bring attention to the site’s importance to modern town planning and vernacular architecture due to the loss of much of the original form of the village since it was built.
Main economic activities:
Due to the character of Al Qurna, the main economic sectors of activity is agriculture and tourism. Also, other sectors that play a significant role in the local economy including the livestock and commercial. The agricultural sector in the village is of great significance where an important part of the population cultivates sugar canes and bananas. The commercial sector in the city is ranked second after the agricultural sector, most of which depend on agricultural production in the center.
