Tunisia: Clima-Med organised the National Coordination Group’s first workshop to activate and strengthen its role in mainstreaming climate action

As part of a component to strengthen governance and mainstream climate action in coordination with the relevant national authorities, the Clima-Med project organized a first workshop on sustainability for the National Coordination Group (NCG) in Tunisia on December 1, 2022, in Tunis.

This one-day event took place in the presence of the project’s two focal points (Ms. Sameh Benfguira from the Ministry of Economy and Planning and Ms. Awatef Larbi from the Ministry of Environment). The workshop was attended and supported by various institutions members of the NCG in Tunisia such as the Ministry of Interior, the CPSCL, the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME), the National Agency for Waste Management (ANGed), the National Agency for Environmental Protection (ANPE) as well as other key stakeholders. The workshop was organized to address and discuss with the participants the possibilities of perpetuating and institutionalizing the NCG.

At the closing of the event, it was agreed to create the NCG within the already existing UGPO Unit to carry out the follow-up and coordination activities relating to implementing the Paris Agreement on climate change and to add the Terms of Reference proposed by Clima-Med to those of the UGPO. The country’s Climate Action Coordination Strategy (CAS) will be amended by the NCG once institutionalized with the help of the Clima-Med team.

This event was also an opportunity to discuss the creation of a nationally supported and operational SECAP Support Mechanism. Such a structure would work as a national support system to assist in preparing and implementing the Action Plans and would benefit from the various tools prepared by Clima-Med.
