COP26: Clima-Med presented innovative funding models mainstreaming climate action in the South Mediterranean region

On November 2, 2021, Clima-Med took part of the side event ”Climate Action in the Mediterranean” that was held jointly with the Union for the Mediterranean (UFM), the government of Cyprus, and the Network of Mediterranean Experts on Climate and Environmental Change (MedECC). The event was moderated by Mr. Grammenos Mastrojeni, Senior Deputy Secretary General of UfM Secretariat

Opening remarks and introductions were be made by H.E. Constantinos Kadis, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of Cyprus, H.E. Dr. Muawieh Khalid Radaideh, Minister of Environment of Jordan, UfM Co-Presidency, (Jordan), Mrs. Silvia Crescimbeni, UfM Co-Presidency, Directorate-General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA).

Mr Kadis presented the Cyprus Climate Change Initiative and its innovative approach; Dr. Fatima Driouech, Associate Professor at the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic and Coordinator of MedECC presented an overall scientific assessment on the impact of climate change in the Mediterranean;

The representative of H.E. the Minister of Environment of Jordan gave an overview of His country’s progress towards implementing the NDC; Professor Costas Papanikolas, Advisor of the President of the Republic of Cyprus and Special Envoy on Climate, presented the scientific analysis applied through the Cyprus Climate Change Initiative;

 

 

And finally, Clima-Med’s Senior Banking and Climate Finance Expert, Dr. Vanni Puccioni, presented the project’s approach towards “finding solutions for innovative climate funding strategies in the Mediterranean”, which includes preparing pilot financing models to replicate, Climate Finance Guidebooks, and investigating – in partnership with national financing authorities and IFIs – new innovative schemes to finance climate projects at cities’ level.
